December 5, 2013: Dog Safety (Survey: 5000 sent, 4305 responses)
Purpose: We have seen a surge in dog harness purchases over the past few years, and wanted to investigate why this trend is happening.
Out of 4305 responders, 72% have reported visiting the Veterinary office more frequently than ever before due to their dog having Back/Joint pain, and trouble walking.
38% reported that they have visited a hospital for the first time ever requiring minor to major surgery, most of which are life-long Dachshund owners who grew up with Dachshunds, or owned one most of their adult lives.
Survey Notes: Dachshunds are known to have back/spine issues related to IVDD (Intervertebral disc disease) a condition where the cushioning discs between the vertebrae of the spinal column either bulge or burst (herniate) into the spinal cord space. As a results of increased spinal aggrivation in recent times, these owners are opting to use custom harnesses to help ease spinal pressure/pain compared to using collars. Reasoning behind this trend is unknown and can be attributed to a number of factors including more physical activity such as jumping (i.e. beds or couches), swimming activities and/or improper handling/care by other people.
